TROUBLESHOOTING
Make a Wi-Fi test log your provider can use
Desk research · Published 2026-10-16 · Updated 2026-10-17 · No hands-on product testing

A useful test record answers where, when and how the connection was measured. It can make a provider conversation more focused, even when it cannot diagnose the problem on its own.
Record the setup
Note the device, room, time and whether it used Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Include the download result and, if relevant, upload, delay and whether a call actually broke up. A test during a large download tells a different story from a quiet test in an otherwise idle home.
Change one thing
Take a router-side reading and a problem-room reading on the same device. If you move the router or change a node position, record that change and repeat the comparison. Switching device, room and time simultaneously makes a result harder to interpret.
Keep the contract separate
A retail headline speed is not the same as your contract's minimum commitment. If a suitably performed wired test is below the minimum you actually have, repeat it and contact your provider with the record. It is evidence to investigate, not an automatic finding of breach or compensation entitlement.

A simple record
| When | Device / connection | Location | Result / observation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Same evening, test 1 | Laptop / Wi-Fi | Beside router | Record Mbps and whether other activity was paused |
| Same evening, test 2 | Same laptop / Wi-Fi | Problem room | Record Mbps and any interruption |
| After one deliberate change | Same setup where possible | Repeat both places | Record improvement or no change |
Keep personal identifiers out of a shared copy. You do not need to give this site your address, account number or router password. Its action-list download contains only the measurements and next steps you entered here; store it appropriately on a shared device.
Next action: take one comparable pair of readings, then use the triage. If the service is unavailable everywhere, check the provider's outage route instead of trying to fill every speed field.
