Seven useful device links
Eight ports leave seven after one connects back to the router. Count fixed devices, access points and wired mesh links separately, then leave sensible spare capacity.
What it does not add
The plain GS308 supplies neither Wi-Fi nor PoE output. A PoE-only access point needs a compatible power source. It also does not increase the speed of the incoming broadband connection.
When a smaller option is enough
If four remaining ports cover your links and spare capacity, compare the five-port TL-SG105. If your router already has enough free ports in the right place, you may need no switch.
