Measure the route you will use

Follow the route around furniture and along the intended safe path, with enough slack at both ends. A straight-line room measurement may be too short. Do not trap the lead under a closing door, create a trip hazard or treat it as a specification for fixed building wiring.

Two lengths, one cable family

The researched Lindy options are Cat.6 U/UTP black patch leads: part 48080 at five metres and 48082 at ten metres. These are length choices in one family, not competing speed winners. Match the part number as well as the category when checking a listing.

Check the connection at each end

Your router and device need suitable Ethernet sockets. Some laptops require an adapter; establish the exact device requirement rather than adding one automatically. A switch may help if the router lacks ports, but does not add Wi-Fi or upgrade the incoming broadband service.

If the existing connection works for everything you need, there may be no reason to change it. Judge any upgrade against the original task, such as a work call or TV stream, and keep a before-and-after record.

Keep outdoor links separate

An indoor patch lead is not automatically suitable for weather exposure, burial or a route between buildings. Use the garden-office finder and an appropriate installer assessment for that job. A longer indoor lead is not a shortcut around those requirements.
